The Relations of the Islamic Republic of Iran with the Republic of Indonesia

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Republic of Indonesia has commenced their diplomatic relations at the level of Minister Plenipotentiary in 1950 and upgraded their diplomatic relations to the Ambassador level in 1959 The bilateral relations of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Republic of Indonesia have always been friendly during the course of history enjoying an active political,economic and cultural bilateral cooperation.

During the recent years, the senior officials of the two countries have conducted numerous meetings and consultations. The then president of Islamic Republic of Iran paid an official visit to Indonesia at 2006 During this visit , 6 cooperations MOU,S have been inked in various political and economic fields H.E Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,the former president of the Republic of Indonesia, heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation, paid back the visit to iran in 2008. important MOU,S  have been concluded during  this visit as well 

HE Mr. Boediono, the former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, also, visited Tehran accompanied by an economic and political high- ranking delegation to participate in the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran in August 2012. During his stay, H.E Mr. Boediono visited the Supreme Leader and the former president of I.R.Iran  

In 2013, H.E Dr. Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the I.R.Iran met H.E Mr. Marty Natalegawa, the former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia in the sideline of the UN General Assembly in New York. In 2019, during the Asian Talks Tour, H.E Dr. Zarif paid a visit to Indonesia and held talks with H.E Retno Marsudi, the RI FM. During the meeting, the doctrine of the I.R.Iran toward the JCPOA in current situation has been elaborated and the requisiteness for the commitment of the other party to its obligation and the benefit of the Iranian Nation from the economic interests of JCPOA have been stressed by the Iran’s FM.  Backing the promotion of the political consultations and bilateral cooperation regarding the paramount issues of the World of Islam and other International Organizations were among other issues discussed in this meeting

In 2015, H.E Dr. Rouhani, the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, heading a high-ranking delegation, participated in the Asia-Africa conference commemoration in Indonesia; both Iran’s and Indonesia’s presidents conducted a tête-à-tête meeting. Reciprocally, H.E Mr. Joko Widodo, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, too, paid a visit back to Tehran in 2016 and the bilateral relations in all favorite fields have been reviewed. Prior to this visit, H.E Mrs. Marsudi, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia visited Tehran in 2015 to make this presidential meeting happen

The bilateral Cooperation of the two countries in international communities and organizations, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and D-8, has always been always friendly and constructive. The two countries enjoy close cooperation concerning international issues particularly Iran Nuclear issue and Human Rights

So far, 9 meetings of the joint consultative committees have been held at the level of MFA Deputy Ministers and in this framework, numerous topics including political, cultural, economic and international issues have been reviewed. The last round of talks was held virtually on june 30,2021.

                                                                                                      

                                                                                      

On April 21, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran HE. Dr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, paid a visit to Jakarta and hold meetings with H.E President Joko Widodo and the Indonesian Foreign Minister H.E Madam Retno Mersudi.  During these meetings, the Iranian Foreign Minister expressed the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran to further develop the fraternal relations between the two countries and appreciated Indonesia's principled positions in the Security Council to safeguard JCPOA and implement the Resolution 2231.

 Dr. Zarif also expressed his gratification toward the growth in trade relations between the two countries and the bilatetal agreement  to benefit the capacities of the Joint Economic Commission and other strategies to strengthen the economic relations between the two countries.

Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi was officially welcomed by Joko Widodo President of the Republic of Indonesia in Merdeka palace on May 23, 2023.

President Raeisi has paid this visit at the official invitation of his Indonesian counterpart. The visit aims to expand and deepen economic and political interactions between Iran and Asian countries.

Meeting with the President of Indonesia and signing important bilateral cooperation documents, as well as holding a meeting with the President of the ASEAN, the Speaker of the People’s Representative Council of Indonesia, the Speaker of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, attendance at Esteghlal mosque  and meetings and discussions with Indonesian and Iranian businessmen are among president's plans for this two-day trip.

This is the 12th foreign trip by President Raeisi since he took office in August 2021. The trip is aimed at deepening economic, political and cultural relations between Iran and Indonesia, which established their diplomatic ties some 70 years ago.

Raeisi announced to reporters , that Indonesia is an important country in southeast Asia, which possesses a key position in regional and international arrangements, stressing that the expansion of cooperation with aligned nations is among the policies of his administration.

During this trip,  documents  were signed with the aim of expanding cooperation in economic, trade, cultural, customs and health  during his two-day stay in Jakarta.
